For some lower income people Social Security is a safety net, especially for a lot of elderly widows who would otherwise be in great financial difficulty.
For those of us who either through good personal financial planning and/or good fortune have adequate retirement income from personal savings, pensions, IRAs, other sources, etc. Social Security is best viewed as the safe, secure piece of your overall retirement income, and having it allows you to be more agressive in your other investments, to balance the risk/return profile of your overall portfolio. You can invest a little more in equities, mutual funds, high yield bonds, hedge funds, commodities, other alternative investments with higher relative levels of risk, because you know you have that safe, conversative piece in Social Security.
