Cogeneration?
Maybe they use a closed-loop heat exchanger with alcohol as a coolant. The heat from the batteries vaporizes the alcohol, which drives a small turbine, which in turn charges the battery. Re-liquified alcohol recirculates back to the battery. I'm just guessing.
I'd like to know what the drag-area coefficient of the Volt is...
