I was thinking of my car insurance gamble the other day. I pay it not only because of the laws but because I MIGHT have an accident. No guarantee. Could go forever without an accident.
But I might. It's possible. If I do, I'd like the consequences to be as tolerable as I can arrange. And we all do that, spending money which might put food on our families (sic) or purchase toys.
However, people in the US don't want to spend any money protecting their progeny from a probably calamity. Because, according to them, it MIGHT not happen. At least, they don't think it will happen on their watch, so why spend the money? Even if it might be akin to health insurance for their kids and grandkids. The hell with them, they MIGHT NOT get sick.
Even though the weight of the evidence is for an accident occuring, they don't want to spend their money protecting the world for mankind, including their future families.
As has been noted: "The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness." John Kenneth Galbraith
