Sensics Panoramic Head-Mounted Displays
These not-quite-there-yet virtual reality goggles still cost $20,000, the same cost of a 15-inch plasma display in 1995. Yeah baby. Ten years from now nobody will own a computer or a cellphone. Such things will be clunky and antiquated. Most people will simply pull a pair of wrap-around shades out of their pocket, put them on, and be immersed in a digital world overlayed on the real. With integrated GPS, Wi-Fi, accelerometers, eye-movement sensors, and motion detectors for hardware-free hand movement interfaces, these wrap-around shades will be powered wirelessly, communicate wirelessly, and seemlessly overlay Google Earth data, directory data, on the surrounding environment. Walking down the street the integrated GPS will allow you to identify persons walking past you in real time, via pop-up bubbles and avatars hovering over them. People could even customize their avatars to send cosmetic enhancements to other people's displays, such as digital costumes or masks. Games will take on a whole new meaning when alien creatures are imaged directly on the real landscape, and you have to defeat them with virtual weapons, and your own physical stamina is put to the test in a real environment! The future is wild man. Can't wait. This ought to be on John Carmack's drawing board, like, right now. I want a new toy!
