Its those on the fence, those in between, those who see the truth but are afraid to admit it to others or maybe even to themselves.
These folks need to know that there there are other voices, there is a middle way, that there is an alternative between groveling surrender and vicious hatred. In fact, they need to be reminded that complex problems do not have simple solutions, and that those who shout that simple solutions are obvious and necessary,(and that those who counsel against them are traitors) usually have their own agenda, and that agenda has nothing to do with whatever controversy they are exploiting.
My position is that practical problems have practical solutions, not ideological ones. Islamic terrorism, Jihadism, whatever you want to call it, IS a problem, it is a danger to tolerance, Liberal values and democratic Western civilization. From a purely PRACTICAL point of view, it makes no sense to alienate our potential allies and those who who are ready to fight alongside us against what is a threat to them as well. Muslims are much more likely to be victims of terrorism than to be terrorists. Anyone who heard and understood President Obama's rebuttal yesterday to Donald Trump will know exactly what I'm talking about.

And for those who heard and didn't understand...well, you're right. They're not worth one wasted electron.
This is the threat of Trumpism, and the politics of ignorance, anger, fear and hate. And lets not be naive, it didn't start with, and isn't limited to, Trump. Listen to the subtext, the hidden message: "These are bad people, they must be hated. And those that don't agree 100% WITH ME must therefore be bad people too. And therefore they must be hated as well." There's nothing new about this strategy. Its been part and parcel of Conservative politics in America for as long as I can remember. That is why I defend the Muslims. Its not just an attack on them, its an attack on me.
You see, I've been here before. When I was growing up, there was only one insult worse than "nigger". It was "nigger-lover".
