The difference between hunting and shooting things:

Sportsmanship.

There are people who believe that hunting is wrong. I am not one of them.

The hunting laws in Pennsylvania require hunters to be on foot. Shooting animals -- any animals -- from moving vehicles is strictly forbidden by the state game code. The concept of sportsmanship upheld by the code requires that hunters, who already possess higher intelligence and elaborate equipment and weapons, give their prey something like a fighting chance. In this way, the prey population is also served, because the slow, the old and the incautious are culled before the quick, young, intelligent animals, leaving a stronger breeding group.

Sarah Palin shoots wolves from helicopters. I don't know a single sportsman or sportswoman who thinks that that is sportsmanlike.

Whatever else I think of Sarah Palin, I don't hold her use of firearms against her. We have 20 rifles, 12 pistols and 4 target shooters in this family. But shooting animals from moving vehicles -- and from the air, if you please! -- is not hunting, any more than throwing dynamite into a lake and harvesting the fish killed is "fishing". To call it "hunting" degrades hunters.
