the details and supprting evidence for this.

I just want to know why I had never heard this before about what
happened to most of the people living in North America at the time.

I would think at least a few legends and stories from survivors would
have made it down the ages after such a traumatic event and this
would be much better known.

I am being far more genuinely inquisitive about this than anything
else, please note.
