McCain could go back and look at the last time he was ahead in the polls. It was right after the convention and Palin's acceptance speech. Dramatic times, with an unexpected, attractive and unknown choice for VP. He was definitely on top of the political world.
Now, with most polls giving Obama over 50%, even if every undecided went for McCain Obama would still win. It's time for the drastic, the dramatic again, in hopes that the "bump" would last until the election.
Maybe have Palin withdraw, accusing the liberal media of being too hard on her and her family. "After much thought I've decided to do what is best for my family and the good people of Alaska and - - - ." Major tears. A somber McCain reluctantly accepts and points out that it's the country which has lost.
And then nominate who? I don't know, but there's no worry about qualifications, just dramatic. If an unknown, their record should take time to dig out. The only known I can think of who might stir up things enough would be Jumpin' Joe Lieberman, who has run for VP before. McCain's base would be upset, but where are they going to go?
Maybe Mary Cheney? One of the Bush daughters? Jessica Simpson is leaning Republican, and could explain that foreign policy is like a football game, where you line up your side against their side and smash 'em and the hardest smasher gets the oil. That's understandable.
