A fraction of the cost, orders of magnitude more RELEVANT data, and most of the high intensity x-ray laser guys are saying if you are spending more than a million a year on energy to run it, you are doing something wrong. A lot of this stuff will eventually go table top. Already the Europeans are working on a table top project.
Plus, there is the frequency comb.
