They are two completely different things designed to do completely unrelated things and to study unrelated things.

Of course they are. Atom smashers are designed to study things that have very little, IF ANY, relevance to your everyday life, and high intensity x-ray lasers are designed to study things that have EVERYTHING to do with your everyday life.
