Close, but a miss
I am fairly certain that it is necessary to build CAPS (the Comet and Asteroid Protection System) on the Moon.
I am also fairly certain that the hazard from cometary impact is at least 10 times what NASA is using in its estimates, if cometary impact is not an even far larger part of the impact hazard.
For me, nanned missions to Near Earth Asteroids are like manned missions to Mars: Nice, but not necessary.
My estimate is that around 60,000,000 people wil die in the next ocean impact, and these have been occuring recently about 1 per 1,000 years.
I am not monomaniacal about this, but those numbers reflect what I am fairly certain of. Given that, I have to act on what I think.
