I just did a little quick research on this myself...
The Kidd Class missile frigates were originally custom-built for the Shah of Iran's Navy, but delivery was canceled by Jimmy Carter (even though they were already paid for by Iran) due to the Iranian Hostage Crisis in 1979. The ships were incorporated into our own Navy and eventually sold to our allies as they approached obsolescence. I guess the Iranians eventually got their money back, as part of the mutual hand-holding and kissy-facing that occurred after the nuke treaty was signed.
The ships were all named after USN flag officers who fell in action against Japan. I served with Admiral Kidd (the son of USS Kidd's namesake, who went down with Arizona at Pearl Harbor). Admiral Kidd was in command of my squadron and my ship Dewey flew his flag.
