For one - that doesn't happen in all hospitals

For two - in the hospitals that provide "free" care, any costs that are not paid by charitable donations are not eaten by the hospital. It gets comingled into the charges the hospital makes to insurance companies and to other patients.

for three - wish I had some stats to back this up :)
