I have been playing with writing some little silly apps for the android OS, in anticipation of the arrival of my phone (tomorrow I hope). I have to say I'm really, really impressed with how easy Google has made this for developers- there was such a high stack of trivia for treo development that I never even wanted to bother with it, and I have really no interest in the iPhone (using or developing for). But I am seriously impressed with the android stack. This thing is going to go far.
I may even get serious about writing apps for it....
Though I must say, the combination of off-the-shelf programmability, a USB port, an inertial compass and GPS thats accurate to within feet really does give me pause. I'm not going to spell it out lest some nutjob out there gets any ideas, but someone with minimal software and hardware skills could do some VeryBadThings. I doubt the central systems of cruise missiles just 10-15 years go had that level of capability.
