Obama hadn't had decades of service to this country. Near perfection vs. decades of service and Palin. Had he served several terms in the Senate, the playing field would have been different. Near perfection vs. experience is what it was all about. We voted for change but that's not what won the election. A damn near perfect campaign did!
I watched Guess Who's Coming to Dinner again tonight on TCM. I hadn't watched it since it had originally come out. I watched it just to remember how things were then. My God, how far we have come! The fact that we may have a bit further to go takes nothing away from how far we HAVE come! I've never had the misfortune to be bigoted. I was raised to NOT be. I was even surprised as all hell to find out my Mother had been bigoted since December 7, 1941 against the Japanese. She had never said anything until I was in my 30's. She did not visit her prejudices on me. I wish now I had had a long talk with her to ask why she had said nothing for nearly 40 years.
BTW, watching it again, I wanted to slap Katherine Houghton's character. She was totally unrealistic. She could not have been so naive. And Sidney Poitier's character--they had to make him a well-known, well-respected doctor who had done some great things in order to make him acceptable to the audience. I have a feeling if he had been portrayed as a mechanic or some other societal non-entity, he would not have been acceptable to the audiences and no so easily to the parents.
