Look, I'm all for national defense. Our borders must not be breached by advancing armies. I'll be there with a sword fending them off myself to defend my family and home. I have the feeling nobody's going to test my resolve there.

In the modern world, by the time they get to America's borders, we're as good as dead. What the heck are you expecting: Mexican cavalry troops?
Europe, South Korea, Taiwan, and a lot of the rest of the world owe their freedom to America's willingness to project our military forces beyond our own borders, and create a credible international deterrent to back it up. God knows our adversaries over the years haven't had a lot of reservations about projecting themselves into other parts of the world.
