The music really holds up well considering when it was recorded; and it was absolutely revolutionary in its day--lush arrangements, incredible production, one of the earliest "concept albums".
But "The Family that Plays Together", although much more intimate and introspective, is probably one of the most extraordinary albums ever produced, definitely on my best 10 list. Not as orchestral as "Sardonicus", it relies more on haunting melodies, intelligent lyrics, the clear distinct diction of young, manly voices, and the California/Ferguson signature two-part harmonies, strong vocal and guitar dual leads an octave apart, all overlaid on a jazz-rock blend that only Steely Dan has ever challenged. All 4 albums are still in print, available on CD online.
Damn they were good! It's true, 90% of everything is crap, but good rock and roll is simply irresistable.
