It's true. Why worry about ice? From time to time you have to defrost the refrigerator. Why not now?
Actually, if some of the science channels I watch are correct, we're worrying about the loss of ice for the wrong reasons. It doesn't necessarily predict a global warming trend but possibly the beginning of the next Ice Age.
Seems when ice melts and the water is released, it's pure water and there's this giant underwater convection current that helps keep our global climates moderate. That convection is fueled in part by the salinity of the ocean water. There are quite a few scientists working on the theory that a massive release of pure water, lowering the salinity at a spot that intersects this global conveyor belt, can cause it to grind to a halt.
The evidence is found in deep ice cores that show that ice ages don't develop slowly over hundreds or thousands of years but instead can erupt in much shorter periods of time (decades). The theories contend that some triggering device brings them on. Research took them to this convection current.
I don't remember all the details of the shows I watched but they were rather convincing. I'm actually encouraged. Global warming, when you live in an area like Arizona, is not exactly something you wish for. However, if my state is going to turn more moderate and seasonal with the ice age glacier and frigid zone ending in Colorado and Utah, it sounds like Arizona will be quite the haven with skiing just outside of Phoenix. Should I begin building my Nordic chalet?
