I don't think anyone who spent more than five minutes observing any communist or other totalitarian slave state would come away with the idea that "equality" was a goal, or even a factor in how such a state operates.
Our education system has enshrined "no child left behind" to the point where no child can get ahead, either. We are ignoring our above-average children, and forcing our below-average children into places they aren't really equipped to go. The average children are caught in the middle.
All in the service of the idea that, at bottom, there is no inherent difference between two different people. This has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with what OUGHT to be true trumping what IS true, and making policies on that.
I'm becoming more convinced as the years go by that people succeed in spite of our public education system, not because of it. It has to mean something that so many of the stories about teachers who have great success teaching children seem to involve some level of "bucking the system" or "going against the flow."
