and the most important public infrastructure project we must immediately tackle is improvements to our nationwide electrical grid, a massive undertaking.

Without that first step, advances in solar cell manufacturing and alternative energy research is much less effective. Our current grid is designed for stable power production, generators running 24/7. It simply cannot handle a surge in power from the Southwest when the sun shines brightly or a pulse of electricity when the wind generators in the Midwest hit their full potential.

No single utility can manage the costs and resources to build and maintain this grid. It is clearly a national project and ties right in with security issues.

Oh but wait, according to Tom the environmentalists will stop that before it can get started. Never mind. Let's do nothing. It's worked so well in the past few decades.
