I think solar systems would make grid improvements less urgent.

Since solar power would be generated near the points of useage, the demand for interstate grids would be lessened.

I'm not thinking so much of massive solar power stations, though they are a great option, as I am about household systems. Even on overcast days they generate some power, so one just adds more panels.
