re: Couldn't get past #6

The motivation of a private investor is to place money where it will make more money.

The motivation of a government is to place money where it will increase the power of the government.

Democrats count on people not seeing too deeply into these things. A thousand new jobs created building a new bridge are easy to count and you can take pictures of the workers for the paper. Nobody is going to count entrepreneurs who didn't get investment money who would also have hired people.

Then there's the kind of jobs "created." Go back to the construction site in five years. How many workers do you see? Now, go to that new company a successful entrepreneur has built. See the difference?

How many auxiliary jobs are created by a new bridge compared to a new industry? How much real economic growth?

Has anyone noticed that suddenly the "Bridge to Nowhere" idea has been radically rehabilitated? Remember the scorn when the bridge's supporters tried to tell us how it would improve the local economy?

We can cut past all the crap. The prime objective of this "infrastructure" burst is to dump billions into union jobs, strengthen the unions, and collect the millions that the unions dump back into Democratic political coffers. Entrepreneurs don't hire a lot of union people. The jobs created, however temporarily, will make flashy headlines and pump up the numbers. But to maintain those numbers will require an endless government-funded series of construction projects, with those billions again being drained from places where permanent jobs might be created. I don't know how long that can be kept up.
