On the Airbus, any openings in the fuselage close and become watertight.

Wheels down would not be watertight. The airbus has a "ditching" button that automatically seals everything. Also, they don't open the rear exit doors since that would tend to sink the plane tail first.

Today Show was very informative this morning. :-)
