I can't afford much good art. My friend Gary acquired a lot of Michael Whelan cover art in the old days, and I have no idea what it would be worth now. I do have art books.

The art critic industry, like many other types of critics, seems to be hugely inbred, with a lot of the critics working harder to impress each other than inform the general public.

It seems to be almost an axiom that art that appeals to the general public and is purchased by them is treated with contempt by many of the formal critics.
