The end of an oppressive regime and liberation

No, not that. Whatever you're thinking.

The last of my children's fire-belly toads finally expired (obvious joke avoided). The other one died last year. My kids got two when they were still in primary school, and I assume they lived long lives for toads.

I dumped the aquarium. Over the years it had developed a remarkable and unknown ecosystem, probably because I once dumped some pond water in there to try and get a population of snails going. The rocks were covered with lush, bright-green fluffy weed of some kind, and if you looked very closely, the surface of the water was teeming with tiny white insects of some kind, barely visible. Certainly it was a great place to be an amphibian. I'll miss the toads, I suppose, but not the faint pervasive swamp smell in the house.

Much rejoicing there was in the little cage of feeder crickets!

All were liberated in the rosebush where their lucky forebears were released under the long-standing rule that said if the toad didn't want to eat, the cricket goes free. I then instituted my personal Marshall Plan by dumping the remainder of the cricket food into the bush with them. Good luck to them all.
