There have been so many different estimates over the years. I recall one from maybe a decade ago (from a biologist, I believe) who suggested that the processes involved in the creation of life were SO complex and unlikely that, in his view, life on earth could very well be the only game in town. Can you imagine that? A universe completely devoid of life, except for us. A terrible waste of space, as Dr Sagan wrote.
