My guess is that he and Trump may have discussed a few business deals, or maybe some of Trump's associates did some consulting for the Russians, but nothing illegal or even particularly sinister.
However, Trump can't help but lie, he sees everything as a conspiracy against him. Why else would he be so hesitant to show his tax records? So whatever routine business dealings Putin might have had with Trump, something no one would normally care about, has now become a Really Big Deal. For example, The Donald might have been interested in building a Moscow Trump Hotel. Or maybe somebody in Trump's cabinet has negotiated a really big oil drilling deal with the Russian government oil monopoly...
Remember, its not the crime, it's the cover up.
And of course, as RL points out, all those who voted for Trump are now dragged into the coverup too.
