To any thinking person it's perfectly clear that it's not the political philosophy that's evil. It's the people carrying it out in extremes that subvert the good parts for their own personal gain and power.

If that's not true then obviously Christianity is abject evil because of the terrible saga of the Crusades and the Salem witch trials. Capitalism is evil because of the extremes of fascist regimes. Socialism is evil because of the overreach of Stalin and Lenin. Islam is evil because of radicals like Al Quaeda. Every philosophy must be inherently evil because somewhere within its reign, one of its adherents was a bloodthirsty, greedy, and horrible bastard who's breath probably stunk as well.

Guys like Tom will always want to turn it into the black and white because he's smart enough to know that the majority of humans respond well to that form of thinking. It's very fun though to watch him squirm when his own philosophy is held up to the same burden of good and evil. Every time that happens, he knows he's on the losing side of the argument, refuses to address the warts of his compatriots, and trots out the straw man.
