Is there a way that isn't cruel and unusual?
I'm not totally against the death penalty. The question in my mind is whether that person would kill again if they ever got loose. If so, don't take a chance. No one should have to suffer again.
And I suspect lethal injection is as "humane" as can be done. Physicians can't do it, but it's not rocket science. Phlebotomists find veins all the time. Veterinarians kill large mammals. Drugs which render people unconscious are common, and there's no sense in skimping on them.
The Russians have a way. The criminal doesn't know when it will happen, and at some random time they get a shot in the back of the head. Cheap, fast and no big production.
