And now, book purchases from the market at large, including but not limited to Amazon:
Yes, the NYT is the devil in print, but their list is gathered from retail outlets that include... well, let me quote from the NYT list:
Rankings reflect sales, for the week ending Mar. 14, at many thousands of venues where a wide range of general interest books are sold nationwide. These include hundreds of independent book retailers (statistically weighted to represent all such outlets); national, regional and local chains; online and multimedia entertainment retailers; university, gift, supermarket, discount department stores and newsstands. An asterisk (*) indicates that a book’s sales are barely distinguishable from those of the book above. A dagger (†) indicates that some bookstores report receiving bulk orders. Among those categories not actively tracked are: perennial sellers; required classroom reading; text, reference and test preparation guides; journals and workbooks; calorie counters; shopping guides; comics and crossword puzzles. . . . These lists are an expanded version of those appearing in the Mar. 29 print edition of the Book Review.

The business books are in a separate section of the list. Access to links for the whole list here.
There is some overlap with the Amazon list, but not a great deal.
Amazon accurately reflects the buying habits of bookbuyers who can use Amazon to shop. That would be people with internet access and credit cards. It doesn't track people who buy books at bookstores, at Powells.com, at the supermarket or discount department store, or who use the library.
I am sorry the gentleman from AIG feels put-upon, but to quote Aesop, "He who lies down with dogs gets up with fleas." Sure, it's not fair. There's a lot worse that's unfair going on right now which will pass him by. As he said in his letter, he got his American dream. Fortunately for him, his portion of the American dream allows him the luxury of resignation without worrying how his children will eat next week or whether they will have to sleep in a tent.
I am also sorry that he feels persecuted by the government, even though the Congressional posturing would likely be stricken down by the Supreme Court if enacted as law. If he tried, he could find people who could tell him a thing or two about real government persecution that might possibly help him feel a bit less victimized.
