Neurone by neurone
...is the only way I'd ever upload. Some fancy nanotech neurones replacing my old ones bit by bit - so long as I still feel the same, then I'll know that I'm Me 2.0 eventually.
But I tend to agree about the consciousness puzzle. The recent finding about synchrony across the brain being present when you're conscious makes a lot of sense. Consciousness feels unitary even though it's obviously composed of millions of neural inputs and neuronal events, so any process that unifies brain activity during a conscious perception is a fair candidate for a neural correlate of consciousness... but that still doesn't explain what consciousness is.
