A very long time ago I learned...
...that the way to respond to a compliment was simply to say, "Thank you!." And that is what I do. Sometimes I may add a bit, ie "I fell in love with the colors the moment I saw this." or something in a similar vein. I never denigrate a compliment because that's what you're doing when you do other than say, "Thank you."
