Inheriting a relatively peaceful country with a budget surplus, Bush appointed an NSA who could not have imagined 9-11 and didn't see it coming despite warnings and evidence.

Bush started two wars, spent money without reservation and left behind a floundering economy, two unfinished wars, an unstable Pakistan, and a US which had given up the moral leadership of the world.

It takes time to get back. It takes money to get back. One doesn't simply wave a wand and undo all the damage done by Conservatives in the previous 8 years.
