There's a hostility to the private automobile out there that goes back many years.
The reality is that personal transportation works better for most people than public transportation does. It goes where they want, when they want, and carries them and their families in privacy.
You can get around on mass transit alone if you fall into certain demographics. I didn't have a car until I was out of college, but I didn't have a family or a real need to go too many places.
To the best of my knowledge, nobody ever seriously proposed a cross-country monorail system. The automobile replaced the railroad train for a lot of people, but one wonders what would have happened if the roads had not been subsidized by the government.
