2000 through 2007: Who did Americans consider the "Democratic leader? Ted Kennedy? The Clintons? Pelosi? Howard Dean? Other than presidential candidates of the times, and Gore and Kerry became pretty much non-entities in national politics soon after their loss.

Before 2007, nobody outside Illinois knew Obama from a hole in the ground.
