The first thing to check out is drinking. Now, it's not always the case but it's certainly a reasonable assumption. Far more reasonable than a pretzel, far more likely than overtired, exhaustion, etc.
I know when I got sober I had a condition which affected my eyes, leaving them bloodshot. My wife and I had a deal - if she suspected I'd been drinking she could ask and I'd be honest. She did, I wasn't.
HOWEVER, I'd trained her to suspect drinking. It was a legitimate suspicion, and for me to run around saying it wasn't fair to ask would have been naive. And stupid.
"Well, don't you trust me?" The usual response.
"Yeah, I trust you to drink." That's the history.
Or, Reagan's answer on missile reductions was a great one. "Trust, and verify."
