How does the law read in Italy?

We are so used to the Anglo-Saxon tradition of "innocent until proven guilty" that we sometimes forget the Code Napoleon tradition which states that innocence must be proven by the defendant once prosecutors bring charges. I have no idea to which tradition modern Italy's constitution cleaves. Many of the Italian states before unification in 1861 had been in the sphere of influence of the French Empire, and then handed back to the Austrian Empire after the fall of Napoleon. So it could go either way.

If she must prove her innocence of the murder, she's going to have a rough go of it, because she has lost her innocence in so many other ways.
