Oh, Shatner has an ego. Star Trek was HUGE, almost as big as the Beatles if you consider the impact it had on society back then. He was "The Captain" and he was sick of signing autographs in airports, and being expected to save the universe.

And personal insults usually don't sit well when they bite.
I'm not too sure who's side I'd be on.
