What earthly use is it?

Thanks to TB bringing for bringing this hardware to our attention.

My question is, what possible value could this weapon have?

From a purely military point of view, it is worthless. If you need to shred a target efficiently, you need a bigger caliber or some kind of fragmentation projectile. In ground combat, this thing would use up all its ammo in seconds, and a panicky infantry or armor crew would empty it almost immediately. The concept has some military value in applications where you need an extremely high volume of fire which must be delivered to a relatively soft target in a very short amount of time. The 20mm Vulcan cannons used by fighter aircraft and the Phalanx anti-shipmissile defense systems are examples where the Gatling concept this mini-gun is based on makes perfect sense: You have to put out a lot of bullets in a split second at a fast-moving very high-value and unarmored vehicle. As a strictly anti-personell weapon, it might be effective used from helipcopters or gunships against dispersed bodies of concealed troops. But logistics considerations suggest you might be better off carrying something else that can do the same job, and other jobs, as well, like a grenade launcher.

But this gadget is not a viable ground or vehicle weapon for a variety of reasons: too heavy, too much ammo consumption, too small a caliber, and probably a headache to maintain in the field. It's main appeal seems to be that it's "cool".

OTOH, one of Arnold's buddies used one against the Predator! But only with mixed success.
