re: What earthly use is it?

It's used to protect the President in motorized convoys. It's for soft vehicle targets with multi-passengers carrying automatic weapons. It's what Nixon wishes were in his convoy, in April 1958, in Venezuela. A scary tool for the ultimate in expedient crowd control.

It's part of a stable of weapons used for such purposes. It's accompanied by a number hand held and vehicle operated Stingers for airborne or harder threats.

It's not really a serious military weapon. It's just a lot better than having 5 Secret Service agents return fire with uzis and .45's like some 25 year old episode of Miami Vice. As the President flees, these vehicles turrets emerge and start returning fire.

As impressive as the video was, it pales to when you see one of these open up with the automated Stinger launchers in lieu of the chain gun. The driver can control the targeting of that if need be, though usually a passenger does while the driver drives. When 5 of these open up on a convoy, 3 with gatling guns and two with Stingers, you can take out helicopter gunships, small aircraft, a few tanks (if you get the first shot) and even take out a building or three all while suppress angry mobs or a small (incompetent) army. It has limitations but it also has some 'extras' for even more dangerous targets.

Rest assured, no Venezuelan leftists will be getting a chance to spit on an American again.

But Obama and Biden are so universally loved around the world, I'm sure they'll never have to use these things.
