Coming as it does right now, after 8 years of the most ruinous, devastating attempt to establish a Conservative dictatorship hell-bent upon destroying human and civil rights, that majority is necessary to override the rear-guard actions of those for whom America is an instrument of imperialism.
There is a lot to undo, and the people are safer in the long run under Democratic rule. Imagine if Bush-Cheney and their ilk had been in power from 1932 to 1952? It wouldn't have been just the West Coast Japanese-Americans who would have been shipped off.
I truly believe America as we know it, America as the Constitution envisions, America as a democracy would have disappeared into the "national security" gulag and Eisenhower's "military-industrial complex" would even more blatantly than Iraq be using the American military to expand the empire.
