I am sure the Chinese took it as some kind of a portent, as the Royal
Astronomers/Astrologers' job was to monitor the heavens for signs about
the future of the Empire and its Emperors.
Supposedly for a long time historians always noted that the 1054 SN
was not reported by Europeans even though it was just as visible there
as in China. The view was that since Aristotle said the heavens were
unchanging plus the other view that stars were just holes in the big
dome where Heaven shone through that nothing ever changed up there,
being perfect and all. Since then I think at least one record was found,
but I can't remember the details.
