EMP isn't the end of the world and his estimation of 90% of the US dead within a year is simply horrifyingly wrong.
Plans are in place for EMP survival.
Vehicles are naturally the first thing put back into service because food, medicine and parts need to be able to travel where needed. Semi-rigs, planes and other craft are shielded from EMP all over the nation and ready to be called into service after an EMP might hit.
And the EMP shockwave effect can vary greatly in its distribution. Like all fields, an EMP has strong points and weak points, crests and troughs, which makes the effect less than 100 percent effective. In a major city perhaps 70-80 percent of the systems will be inoperable - leaving that 20-30 percent still operational. EMP is good for taking out broad targets like powerlines and immediate vicinity mobile targets like tanks, planes and personnel carriers. It is not good for taking out vehicles in parking garages or shielded electric targets that have damping environmental surroundings. It works great on satellites and would take out large scale power generation.
Shielded fuel-driven basement back up generators are unlikely to be affected and many would still work after an EMP.
While the nation would be hurting, it would NOT be unrecoverable. Food, refrigeration (those non-electric refrigeration units might be bought up by savvy, apocalypse fearing, US consumers) and transportation would be priority number one and from there, the rebuilding and restoring of electric power to the cities would follow right behind.
Something like that might cause death for the immediately ill and those hospitalized. It would cause trouble, illness and fatalites in cold and hot climates - but it would never reach even 5 percent of the population.
In fact, the 60 percent of Americans who are obese might lose weight with the extra exercise and rationed food and become even healthier as a result. Suddenly 60 percent of overweight America would be put on an enforced diet.
;-)
There is a positive side to every potential outcome.
