But you are making a connection between wealth and greenness that I do not think exists. I did not read the link - was he really spouting off about belt-tightening? Or was he spouting off about waste of energy?

You might not be making one of your tortured arguments where you try to demonstrate one thing is another. But it looks like it on the surface.
