Thomas Jefferson - Creationist?!

A prominent creationist supporter recently had an essay published in the opinions page of the
Boston Globe newspaper declaring that Thomas Jefferson was indeed a creationist.

The American Revolutionary War expert who runs the most excellent blog Boston 1775 quickly
took this assertion to task, pointing out among other things that most intellectuals in
Jefferson's time thought that God made the Universe, even if in the case of the Deists he
then left it running like a mechanical clock to operate by itself once going.

No doubt the creationist chose Jefferson out of the other Founding Fathers (and Mothers)
due to his scientific and rationalist leanings, such as editing the Bible to remove everything he
thought was due to superstition. Jefferson also thought meteorites were bunk, but in his day
it was not foolish to assume that rocks could not just fall out of the sky.

The original essay and its detailed rebuttal may all be found here:

I wish the creationists would just say that they think a supernatural deity made the Cosmos
and leave it at that, rather than constantly either battle science about it or worse, pretend to
BE scientific in their attempts to make creationism legit. They will be left with just faith in
their system, but isn't that the whole point of religion, to take it on faith?
