Because Einstein is known by just about everyone on the planet even if
they have little idea what his ideas were about, and because he liked to
invoke God in some of his quotes (God does not play dice with the
Universe, for example), the religious groups often declare that Einstein
believed in God and therefore, because he was so smart, God must exist.
In reality, Einstein was raised nominally Jewish but eventually became an
agnostic, saying that he did not buy into a personal God and that his
idea of God were the physical laws of the Universe, but it was just
easier to call it God rather than the physical laws of the Universe.
There is a book titled Einstein and Religion that goes into the details.
