Intuition
One of my very favorite inventors, Buckminster Fuller, believed that his inventions were really discoveries, aided by focused intuition. He named his boat Intuition. But he also thought that his ideas were recieved from outside "forces'".
Me, I believe in intuition. Our brains are really, really, really damn good at detecting patterns. Sometimes too good - like seeing Christ on a burnt biscut - but always remarkable. That wrinkled mass can make some amazing leaps in drawing conclusions from limited data. I don't need to invoke the metaphysic in this - that's an insult to the amazing abilities of our minds. We like to look for outside forces when we should be looking within.
(EDIT: I recommend adding Bucky's "Critical Path" to your reading list.)
