It was a ruin, an old Anasazi pueblo maintained by the government as an archaeological museum. There were many old buildings, close together, and even though empty of furnishings or inhabitants (except for the occasional tourist like myself) it looked like it could have been peopled by ghosts. I kept expecting to see a brown face poke out of a window, or standing in a doorway.
The place was spooky. It was the closest thing to haunted I have ever experienced, the feeling was everywhere, it was palpable, they were still there, just around every corner, watching me. I didn't feel threatened, just like someone was watching me. The rangers let us wander around freely, and every time I went in one of those little rooms, or peeked in a doorway or window, I expected to find a family there, staring back at me
I don't remember the name of the place, but some of you may have been there and can identify it from some of my clues. The museum guides mentioned it may have been settled as a sacred site because vents in the ground leading to underground caves made strange sighing and moaning sounds as atmospheric pressure changes caused air to be sucked in or expelled. There was also a ball court there, like the ones you see in certain MesoAmerican sites. It made me wonder about the possible cultural contact between our own Pueblos and the great civilizations of Mexico.
