Just about a perfect reply. My only possible exception is on the knight's or gentleman's code of honor. Such codes are individually kept. The code could indeed be a fraud or it could be misunderstood.
I consider Sherman to be among the finest military leaders ever and I am certain he followed a code of honor.
BTW,Your allusion to hand wringing is precious in it's appropriate use.
