The Mutant Chronicles
I know that many will not agree but I liked this one that was a SYFY channel offering last night.
It was panned by all the critics and got a 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
So what's to like? It was not hard scifi by any means and barely makes the cut of scifi instead of pure fantasy.
A machine from space was sealed into the earth 10,000 years ago after a great war with humanity. The seal is broken by an explosion on on a 28th century battlefield, releasing undead mutants that quickly slaughter all the battlefield combatantts and convert all the casualties to more undead mutants.
The speed with which the evil mutants proceed to conquer the world makes you wonder how in the hell they got sealed up 10,000 tears ago, in the first place.
Enter the monk who is part of an order called "Keepers Of The Chronicals". He recruits an elite force, (think dirty dozen or magnificent seven), to deliver an ancient device into the bowels of the machine and destroy it.
Sounds horrible right, but wait, the characters were mostly likable and I didn't find myself wishing they would be killed off. The setting in a semi-retro future where all our resources are exhausted is interesting, with steam powered aircraft that have the ability to travel around the solar system was a fresh, if not believable, idea. Steam Punk, I think is the term for it.
Bottom line, I didn't hate it and I didn't feel the 2.5 hours of my life were wasted.
